Iceland, the quiet revolution.

Pokemon Fire Red Online Mac
This is, briefly, the history of events:
* In late 2008, the effects of the crisis Iceland's economy is devastating. Landsbanki was nationalized in October, the country's largest bank. The British government has frozen all assets of its subsidiary Icesave, with 300,000 British customers and 910 million euros invested by local governments and public entities in the UK. A Landsbanki will be followed by two other major banks, the Kaupthing Glitnir. Its main customers are in that country and in Holland customers that their states have to reimburse his savings of 3,700 million euros of public money. By then, all the bank debt is many times Iceland's GDP. On the other hand, the currency collapses and the bag suspended its activity after a plunge of 76%. The country is bankrupt.
* The government officially requested aid International Monetary Fund (IMF), which approved a loan of 2,100 million dollars, supplemented by another 2,500 million some Nordic countries.
* The public protests outside parliament in Reykjavik are increasing. On January 23, 2009 are called early elections and three days later, pans are already crowded and cause the resignation of Prime Minister Geir H. conservative Haarde and his entire government in a block. It is the first government (and all I know) that falls victim to global crisis.
* The April 25 general elections are held for leaving a coalition government formed by the Social Democratic Alliance and the Left Green Movement, headed by new Prime Minister Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir.
* Throughout the 2009 continues the bad economic situation and the year closed with a fall in GDP of 7%.
* By a law widely discussed in parliament proposed the return of the debt to Britain and the Netherlands by the payment of 3,500 million euros, a sum that will pay for all Icelandic households monthly during the next 15 years at 5.5% interest. People get to take to the street and asked to submit the law to referendum. In January 2010 the President, Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson, refuses to ratify it and announced that there will be consultation.
* In the referendum held in March and NO to sweeping debt with 93% of the vote. Icelandic revolution achieved another victory in a peaceful manner.
* The IMF freezes financial aid to Iceland to resolve pending the repayment of its debt.
* Full this, the government has initiated an investigation to resolve legal responsibilities of the crisis. Begin the arrests of several senior bankers and executives. Interpol issued an international arrest warrant against former Chairman of Kaupthing, Sigurdur Einarsson.
* In this context of crisis, we choose a constituent assembly last November to draft a new constitution to incorporate the lessons learned from the crisis and to replace the current one, a copy of the Danish constitution. To do so, go directly to the sovereign people. 25 citizens are elected without political affiliation of the 522 who have submitted applications for which only needed to be over age and have the support of 30 people. The constitutional assembly will begin its work in February 2011 and submit a draft constitution based on the consensus recommendations at various meetings to be held across the country. Must be approved by the current Parliament and which formed after the legislative elections.
* And finally, another as "revolutionary" the Icelandic parliament: Modern Icelandic Initiative for the Media (Modern Icelandic Media Initiative), a bill aimed at creating a legal framework for the protection of freedom of information and expression. They hope to make the country a safe haven for investigative journalism and freedom of information which protect sources, journalists and Internet providers that host news reporting, the U.S. hell and paradise for Wikileaks.
Well this is the brief history of the Revolution Iceland: government resignation of the entire block, nationalization of banks, a referendum to let the people decide on the momentous economic decisions, imprisonment of those responsible for the crisis, rewrite the constitution by citizens and a draft shield of freedom of information and expression. Have we mentioned this in the European media? Do commented on talk radio on repugnant middling politicians and mercenaries of disinformation? Have you seen pictures of the events on TV? Of course not. It must be that the United States of Europe does not seem important enough that a people take the reins of its sovereignty and confront the neoliberal roll. Or maybe they fear that fall of shame to be in evidence once again that democracy has become a plutocracy where nothing has changed with the crisis, but the beginning of a process of socialization of losses and cuts in social precarious working conditions. It is also likely to think that there is still intelligent life among consumer units, both like to call people, and fear a contagion effect. Although it is more likely that this underestimation calculated informative, if not deafening silence, is for all these causes together.
Some will say that Iceland is a small island of just 300,000, with a social fabric, political, economic and administrative much less complex than that of a large European country, making it easier to organize and carry out such changes. However, it is a country which, although they have greater energy independence thanks to its geothermal power, has very few natural resources and its economy is vulnerable which exports 40% dependent on fishing. There are also those who say that they have lived beyond their means by borrowing and speculating in the financial casino as anyone, and it is true. As they have done the rest of the country led by a liberalized financial system to infinity by the same governments irresponsible and suicidal now throw your hands to the head. I just think that the people of Iceland is a cultured, caring, optimistic and brave, who has managed to rectify throwing two balls, to stand up to the system and giving a lesson in democracy to the world.
The country has already started negotiations to join the European Union. I hope for their sake and as they are putting things on the continent with the scourge of impostors who govern us, that the Icelandic people refusing to complete its revolution accession. And would otherwise occur, it was Europe that came into Iceland, because that itself would be the real Europe of peoples.
